Abstract

Prevalence and Screening of Metabolic Syndrome among Healthcare Workers at the University Hospital Centers of Mahajanga Introduction : Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing major public health concern. This study aimed to determine its prevalence and associated factors among healthcare workers in a hospital setting. Patients and Methods : A prospective, descriptive study was conducted among healthcare personnel at the University Hospital Centers (UHCs) of Mahajanga from November to December 2024. Results : A total of 114 participants were included, with 44 cases of MetS, yielding a prevalence of 38.60%. The mean age was 44.93 years (range: 27–60), with a sex ratio of 0.39. Physicians accounted for 65.1% of cases. Cardiovascular history was present in 76.7% of participants. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 28.26 kg/m², and the mean waist circumference was 92.91 cm. All affected subjects presented with hyperglycemia, and 62.8% had hypertension. Hypertension and the presence of xanthelasma were significantly associated with the development of MetS (p = 0.001). Furthermore, obesity and hypertension were identified as independent and significant risk factors for MetS in our series (p = 0.001 and p = 0.013, respectively). Conclusion : The prevalence of MetS is high among healthcare workers. Strengthening preventive measures, particularly lifestyle and dietary interventions as well as physical activity, is essential.
